Bad for Your Hips
By Editorial Staff
Hip health is critical as we age – for several reasons. First and foremost, your hips are essential for lower-body movement; if your hips aren't working well, your ability to walk, jog, exercise, sit, stand and even move at all will be seriously compromised. Second, older people who suffer a hip fracture are in big trouble; in fact, the one-year mortality rate for older adults who suffer a hip fracture is extraordinarily high.
With that said, it's important to do everything we can to avoid increasing our risk of hip issues as we get older. One way to do so is by carefully considering whether neuropathic pain requires the use of a class of medications called gabapentinoids.
Patients hospitalized for hip fractures over a five-year period were significantly more likely to have used gabapentinoids prior to the injury: 30% more likely to suffer a hip fracture within two months of receiving the medication. This risk was even higher than older patients who were frail and thus at risk of hip / bone fracture, but did not use gabapentinoids. Findings appear in JAMA Network Open.
Are there nondrug alternatives for treating neuropathic pain? Yes, and chiropractic care is one of them. Talk to your doctor about your neuropathic pain and how he/she can help.
